A New Decade {40th Birthday}:A Fresh Perspective on Life

Life is funny sometimes, as young children we spend most of our lives wishing to grow up quickly.  Eager to leave the protective nest and explore the world.  Every year, celebrating a birthday and another milestone.  Every moment passing too quickly.  So many years of our lives spent trying to constantly “speed things up”!

Today, as I celebrate turning forty, I also sit and reflect.  Four decades of life lived, with all the crazy, curved roads, bumps and puddles to slosh through along the way.  Each decade in our lives is a reminder of new chapters beginning and finding new roads to travel. Every road isn’t perfect, but each bump and crack shapes us and makes us stronger.

5 Key Perspectives for This Next Decade of Life:

  1. Life Lessons: Remember to run through the grass barefoot, know that it’s still perfectly alright to play in the rain and that our lives are chapters; each new page waiting to be written- Only we can control what is written.
  2. Just “Be Me”: With age comes wisdom, Don’t try to squeeze yourself into some preconceived mold, embrace who you are and the moment you’re in right now.
  3. Health and Fitness Matter: It’s not about being skinny, it’s about being healthy.  Focus on eating pure, whole foods and creating a strong, healthy body from the inside-out.
  4. More “Me Time”: Life is busy- we take on many roles, but we must remember to be good to ourselves. Find what you love, grow your passion for what motivates and makes “you feel good.”  Running brings me confidence, clarity and time for reflection.
  5. Reach for More: Take a risk on a new idea, be brave-believe in yourself, and dare to dream. Push the limits- you may just surprise yourself and exceed your own limitations!

How do you celebrate each new year, decade?  Any words of wisdom or insight?

Happy Friday everyone! This week has been busy and exhausting.  Between finishing up with RRCA coaching certification Sunday evening and an English language arts workshop midweek, I’m ready for the weekend! I’m excited to link with up the Friday Five bloggers- MarCynthia, and Courtney to share my 5 favorite brands!  The following five brands/companies are high on my list of favorites for helping me achieve a healthy, active lifestyle!

Five Favorite Brands/Companies:

  1. This Bar Saves Lives–    The bars, ThisBarSavesLives, Wild Blueberry Pistachio, are a naturally sweet, slightly chewy/crunchy blend of fruit and nuts.  The bars are glutenfree, NonGMO and ingredients are organically sourced in the United States. These bars will be great for breakfast or a much needed snack in the afternoon after teaching, but before a run! I loved purchasing this wristband too! Each wristband purchased, provides a meal to a child in need and contributes to the Water Project.  The Water Project brings water to countries in Africa! Love this company is “Making a Difference!
  2. Charmed Bar – Yup! Another granola bar brand! A company founded by two women!  The company is local to Maryland!  One of the women is a former elementary school kindergarten teacher!  Here on the CharmedBarwebsite there is a link to the “Autism Hope Alliance” organization.  As a teacher, it’s important to support Charmed Bar because they are “Autism Approved”!

I order online and shipping and delivery is quick and easy! The combination of fruit, nuts and almond butter helped fuel my Maine Marathon run at mile 18! I ran with the Charmed Bar in my running shirt pocket! When I’m not fueling, mid run with a Charmed Bar, I’m eating one at breakfast with my coffee!

  3. Nuu_Muu Athletic Dresses– Absolutely love the style and versatility of these athletic dresses! The Made in the U. S. A dresses are a flattering fit on my petite frame! I can wear the dresses to work with a pair of legging capris! At the end of a long day of teaching, this dress does double duty out on a run, walk or hike! This is a Women powered company that gives back to communities!  So many styles and colors are available on the website!

Checkout the Nuu_Muu company website to read about their philosophy on Girl Power, Green Living and Contributions!

  4. Feetures Running Socks – My feet seem to love the snug, yet soft, Feetures socks.  These socks fit perfectly with a bit of a snug, yet supportive feel from heel to toe! Since I’ve been recovering from a sore heel and arch, these socks have been a perfect fit!

Feetures Running sent Zooma Run Ambassadors several l pairs of socks!

  5.  Sizzle Fish – Growing up along the coast of Maine made me a bit of a seafood snob! I had a hard time finding fresh caught wild fish once I moved to southern Maryland.  As a runner, who eats very limited chicken and no red meat, I found myself craving and searching for a great selection of seafood- mainly fish!  Sizzle Fish is an amazing company that allows you to order online and have sustainable, wild caught fish delivered right to your home! All fish and seafood come preportioned and individually packaged- frozen on dry ice! I love that this company helped me to fit healthy, protein and omega-3 rich fish back into my diet!

A variety of sustainable, wild caught fish and seafood packages are available on the Sizzle Fish website! check them out online!

Running Maine

Some days runners just have to get the speed work done and miles logged.  However, running routes do matter and can make a huge difference, mentally and physically, in effort and pace.

When you find that perfect route to run- you know, the one that makes you feel that rush of adrenaline, that run becomes amazing.  Running routes that feed the body and soul with fresh air and scenic views.  Running becomes effortless, it’s easy to feel the miles fly by!

    Running Back Cove Bay

While visiting southern, coastal Maine last week, I enjoyed running two beautiful scenic routes. Running routes surrounded by beauty motivate me to get outside and run. Often times, especially during heavy training season, running can become monotonous and uninviting. Sometimes a runner just needs a change of scenery to keep the spark in training!

I thoroughly enjoyed my early morning runs along the trails of Back Cove Bay in Portland, Maine.

The trails around Back Cove Bay are a combination of gravel and packed dirt that loop around around the estuary basin. The loop is about 3.5 miles.  There are so many reasons to love this running/walking route! Along the trail are several public water fountains that are human and dog friendly! The trail offers amazing views of the city of Portland.  It is very walker, runner, stroller friendly!

various views from along the trail! Loved the view of Maine’s iconic B&M Baked Beans from the bridge!

Enjoying the deep blue views of the estuary basin around Back Cove Bay!

Click the link for  more information on Back Cove Bay Its definitely worth enjoying while visiting Maine!

Eastern Trail Along Scarborough Marsh

Another scenic trail worth walking or running can be found off of Pine Point road in Scarborough, Maine.  The trails are mostly dirt, yet somewhat snow covered in late March/early April.  Along this trail you’ll find runners, walkers and families sightseeing! The trail can be accessed from either side of Pine Point road.

Views of Scarborough Marsh along the open parts of the trail are gorgeous!  Sea gulls, ducks and geese are just some of the various wildlife that call this area home!  Most of the trail is fairly flat with a few sloping inclines over small bridges that overlook parts of the Marsh!

Parts of the trail were still snow covered in late March/Early April

These are definitely running routes that I will enjoy throughout the year as I visit my “former” homestate.  {Maine will Always be “home” in my heart}

Do you have a favorite running route?  Do you vary your running routes during heavy training?
